Coral Gables City Hall Part 1

The other day I stopped by City Hall in Coral Gables.  I have seen and driven past this place so many times since, well a long time a go in a galaxy far far away when I was 15, just learning to drive and anxious to play every golf course in Miami.  Me and my buddy Jon would always come down to the Granada course (we couldn’t afford Biltmore at 15) and play through the 2nd hole that puts you right next to this fantastic building.  But I never noticed it and even recently with all the time I spend chronicling The City of Coral Gables for The Coral Gables Blog I had never stopped to notice how cool it is.  My favorite part is the George Merrick statue is that stares down Miracle Mile into the Heart of Coral Gables.

This is the first set of pics, more to come!  As always clicka da pic for da bigga view!

How to get rid of White Flies on your Trees and Shrubs

You know them, you hate them , you can’t get rid of them!  The dreaded White Fly has invaded South Florida and lives all over our beautiful trees.  And they don’t really care what kind of tree either, they will live on anything.  One of my favorite blog’s is the daily photo blog by Tog of Coral Gables, and Tog has documented cases of entire Ficus trees being brought down by the White Fly.  Here is a link to a post of his where the City of Coral Gables has had to cut down another Ficus because of this problem.

Well fellow citizens, after hundreds of dollars at Home Depot I finally found a treatment that was worked wonders in my own backyard .  It is by the Bayer company, yes the same one you get aspirin from, it is called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed.  Don’t let the boring name fool you this stuff really works.  I test sprayed it at the base of one of my Bird of Paridise Palms and within a few weeks I could already see there were less White Flies.  About 2 months after there are no more white flies and the tree is VERY healthy is the treatment also has nutrients for the tree.

So then I sprayed it at the base of all of my trees and it has totally removed the White Fly from my property.  I was so happy and have seen so many people struggle with this that I decided to let you know.

See the images below for proof and a pic of the bottle.  The stuff goes for like $20 so it is not cheap but you only have to treat every 6 months, good luck!  Let me know how it works!

Coral Gables Granada Entrance Part 2 (The Legend of the Wooden Snakes)

Welcome back to the much anticipated conclusion of the photo tour of the Coral Gables Granada Entrance.

In this edition we will be focusing on the Details and on the West side.  Another way to say this is that these are all the photos that I didn’t have time to upload in Part 1.

And so…Zee Photos!!!

Down to Earth

Coral Gables Specializes in Cool Lamps

I should see if they are looking to sell...

I tried to get the listing but nobody was home

What is the West side's story?

The story is that these wooden snakes were once real snakes and they were friendly snakes so they helped George Merrick build the Granada Entrance but when they fell behind schedule and went over budget he had them turned to wood to help support the parts of the Entrance that they did not finish...I think.

Thanks for reading!

Coral Gables Granada Entrance Part 1

The Granada Entrance to Coral Gables is one of the most beautiful and historic entrances in Coral Gables.  The entrance is situated at the intersection of SW 8 ST and Granada Blvd (click here for Google Street View) and it is made of coral rock probably quarried around the time of the city’s founding in the 1920’s from the nearby Venetian Pool.  The city’s founder, George Merrick, offered this rock for free to be used in the construction of homes and major landmarks.  Mr. Merrick actually originally envisioned similarly designed entrances at the 7 main entry ways to the city but the Great Depression put those plans on hold and only a few of the entrances were completed.  Much later (as in only in the last couple of decades) another wonderful Coral Gables resident, and president of The Coral Gables Garden Club, made it her mission to complete a few more of the entrances and The Coral Gables Blog will be featuring more information on these in an upcoming blog post.

This entrance is one of the original that was finished and when you walk up to it you feel as though you are going back in time to a more enchanted era.  Thousands of people drive past and through this entrance every day but most or maybe none of them take the time to stop and actually walk through this fabulous piece of history.  So without further polluting this article with my writing here is Part 1 of Coral Gables Granada Entrance….enjoy!

And as always click the images for larger view…tomorrow Part 2, the West Side and Detail Pics!

Code Red…if you can handle the truth!

Greetings fellow citizens cowering before the awesome power of Mother Nature!  Fear Not!  Our advanced intellects have finally produced something more useful than remakes of every movie you ever saw as a kid… Code Red for The City of Coral Gables.  No this does not mean that two Marines are going to burst into the City Beautiful in the middle of the night and stuff a sock down its mouth.  Jack Nicholson will not defend your house or property against Tom Cruise unless you know him, in which case I heard he is a beast with a 7 Iron… but you can defend your property against disaster with Code Red!

Code Red is basically a notification system for any important news that the City of Coral Gables needs to deliver to citizens instantly.  Think evacuation orders and boil water orders, not tee times and dinner reservations.  If you go to this link you can register to receive the notifications.  All kidding aside this is a very important and useful service and everyone should register ASAP.

Here is a visual representation of how you will be notified of a Code Red…okay so not ALL kidding aside…
